  132. Note:  FFG.EXE is a stand-alone utility program that doesn't require any
  133.        other support files.  If you know how to do it, a short cut to
  134.        this installation is to simply unzip FFG.EXE, put it in a
  135.        directory on your search path and begin using it.
  136.  
  137. 1.  If not already done, create a directory for FFG (for example C:\FFG).
  138.  
  139. 2.  If not already done, copy the FFG ZIP package file to the FFG
  140. directory.
  141.  
  142. 2.  If not already done, unzip the FFG ZIP file into the FFG directory.
  143.  
  144. 3.  For FFG to be useful, it should be on your DOS search path.  Either
  145. copy FFG.EXE to the DOS directory or another utility directory on your
  146. search path (recommended) or edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to add the FFG
  147. directory to your path statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT (not recommended).
  148.  
  149. 4.  There are two optional environment variables that can be set to
  150. enhance/customize FFG operation:
  151.  
  152. 5.  (OPTIONAL) Environment variable FFGTMP allows you specify where FFG
  153. should put any temporary files it may need to create.  This should be a
  154. relatively fast disk with at least 256K of free space.  In addition it
  155. should have enough space to unarchive any archived files FFG needs to
  156. scan for text.  Your best bet would be to use your fasted hard disk that
  157. has plenty of free space.  In terms of performance a RAM disk would be a
  158. good choice, but may not be big enough.  If FFGTMP is not set, or if
  159. there is insufficient disk space, FFG will look for TEMP and TMP
  160. environment variables and if that fails FFG will attempt to use C:\.
  161.  
  162. 6.  (OPTIONAL) Environment variable FFGOPT allows you to set FFG command
  163. line parameters semi-permanently.  Any options in the FFGOPT are
  164. effectively inserted before any FFG options you type on the command line.

  167. Installation of DEMO and UTILITY Batch Files
  168. --------------------------------------------
  169.  
  170. Note:  These files are not required to use FFG, but they provide valuable
  171.        demonstations of FFG capabilites and can be modified by you for
  172.        your own custom use.  Installation is recommended.  After you have
  173.        tried the demos you can delete these files with no impact on FFG
  174.        operation.
  175.  
  176. 1.  Run UNPACKEM.BAT from the FFG directory, which will create
  177. subdirectories containing the DEMO batch file and some utility batch
  178. files that make use of FFG.  UNPACKEM.BAT will also use FFG to search for
  179. your DOS directory (it actually looks for where the DOS XCOPY program is
  180. located) and gives you the option of copying FFG.EXE there.
  181.  
  182. 2.  If not already done, make sure FFG.EXE is in a directory that is on
  183. your DOS search path. The DOS directory is a good place if you don't
  184. already have another place to put utility programs.

  186. 3.  To run the DEMO programs change to the DEMO_BAT directory and run
  187. DEMO.BAT.

  192.                        FFG Compared to Other File Finders
  193.

  196.           File Finder/Grouper (FFG) performs functions similar to
  197.           those found in other utility programs, but here are some FFG
  198.           features that some other file finders lack:
  199.

  202.           1.  FFG uses the DOS wildcard characters '*' and '?' but
  203.               they have extended function over the DOS counterparts.
  204.               The extended functionality permits you to search for
  205.               strings of characters that appear anywhere in the file
  206.               name.
  207.  
  208.           2.  FFG can search for multiple file specifications in a
  209.               single pass, such as find all BAT, COM and EXE files.
  210.  
  211.           3.  FFG permits you to concisely specify multiple file name
  212.               search masks such as:
  213.               "*[ZIP,ARC,ARJ,LHA,ZOO]*.[COM,EXE]"
  214.               to find all archiving programs.
  215.  
  216.           4.  FFG can search all disk drives or selected disk drives.
  217.  
  218.           5.  FFG can search inside of archive files (ZIP, ARC, ARJ,
  219.               LZH, ZOO).  FFG will also search inside PKZip, ARJ, and
  220.               LHA self-extracting (.EXE) archive files.  (FFG also
  221.               searches inside XEQ COM library files).

  223.           6.  FFG can execute an arbitrary DOS command for each file
  224.               found with or without a user confirmation before
  225.               execution.
  226.  
  227.           7.  FFG finds hidden files and searches hidden directories.
  228.  
  229.           8.  FFG searches inside directories with name extensions
  230.               (e.g., THISISMY.DIR).  Some file finders do not search
  231.               these directories.
  232.  
  233.           9.  FFG can move to the disk and directory of the found
  234.               file (/g option).
  235.  
  236.           10. FFG can search for directories instead of files simply
  237.               by appending a backslash '\' to the search name.
  238.  
  239.           11. FFG can search by a date range, time range, size range,
  240.               or day-of-week range using intuitive syntax to specify
  241.               these filtering criteria.  Multiple include/exclude
  242.               ranges can be specified.
  243.  
  244.           12. FFG can search by the file attributes or combination of
  245.               attributes, such as finding all Hidden Read-Only files.
  246.  
  247.           13. FFG can find files based on the day of the week (i.e.,
  248.               Sun - Sat) they were modified/created.
  249.  
  250.           14. FFG can find files based on whether or not the file
  251.               contains one or more text/ASCII-code strings.  FFG will
  252.               even search for text inside files that are archived if
  253.               you have the associated archive extraction program
  254.               (e.g., PKUnzip, LHA, ARJ, etc.) on your DOS search
  255.               path.

  257.           15. FFG permits you to exclude certain files base on name,
  258.               date, time, size, attributes, day-of-week criteria,
  259.               text contents.

  261.           16. FFG can search for files by date relative to today,
  262.               such as all files modified/created 7 to 14 days ago.

  264.           17. FFG can search for files relative to the current time
  265.               of day, such as all files modified/created within the
  266.               last ten minutes.

  268.           18. The asterisk '*' can be used as a wildcard in date and
  269.               time criteria, such as /d9/*/93 for all September 1993
  270.               files and /t13:* for all 1:00pm - 1:59pm files.

  272.           19. Current month (M), day (D), year (Y) can be specified
  273.               in date criteria such as 1/1/Y-6/30/Y, M/D/Y (today)

  275.           20. Current hours (H), minutes (M), seconds (S) can be
  276.               specified in time criteria such as H:M:S (now).

  278.           21. Partial dates and times are interpreted, such as 9/93 -
  279.               > 9/*/93, 5/1 -> 5/1/Y (Y = current year), 92-93 -> all
  280.               1992-1993 files, 9 -> 9:00:00am.

  282.           22. Multiple date, time, size, day-of-week, attribute, text
  283.               filtering criteria can be specified, which are combined
  284.               in a logical AND or OR depending on how they are
  285.               specified.

  287.           23. FFG lets you pause (press any key) or interrupt (press
  288.               <ESC>) the search operation at any time.

  290.           24. FFG lets you guide the search by using the arrow keys
  291.               to skip files and directories.

  293.           25. FFG can be used to produce database files of its output
  294.               (ASCII comma-delimited files)(/f, option)

  296.           26. FFG provides useful default output format options but
  297.               permits extensive user customization of the output
  298.               format.

  301.               (.BAT) with DOS replaceable parameters (%1 through %9).

  303.               set of commands against the group of files such as
  304.               copy, back up, archive, delete, move, edit...).  The
  305.               power and flexibility of this feature is limited only
  306.               by your imagination.  Although some other finders have
  307.               similar capability, they do not have the same
  308.               flexibility.

  310.           28. By default, when FFG is searching all disk drives
  311.               (i.e., *: is specified), it skips disk drives that are
  312.               logical aliases of subtrees of physical drives that
  313.               will also be searched.  This avoids reports of multiple
  314.               copies of the same physical file when it appears also
  315.               on logical alias drives.

  317.           29. FFG lets you use 43- and 50-line video modes on EGA/VGA
  318.               systems so you can see more on the screen.

  320.           30. Frequently used options can be made semi-permanent by
  321.               setting them in the DOS environment variable FFGOPT

  343.      FFG is a copyrighted Shareware program by Thomas G. Vavoso,
  344.      President, EnGamma.  The evaluation version of FFG is offered at no
  345.      charge to any potential user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it
  346.      with your friends and associates, but please do not give it away
  347.      altered or as part of another system.  The essence of
  348.      "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
  349.      quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive
  350.      for programmers to continue to develop new products.
